The Philippine Embassy in Pakistan, led by Ambassador Jesus I. Yabes, kicked off this year's celebration of the 113th Anniversary of the Declaration of Philippine Independence on June 10 with a well-attended Dinner Reception at the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad.
Gracing the event was Pakistani Federal Minister for Health Mian Riaz Hussain Pirzada. Joining him were other government officials, including Senator Saleem Saifullah Khan and Ministry of Foreign Affairs Additional Secretary Hassan Javed.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Heads of Mission, meanwhile, led diplomats in congratulating the Philippines on the occasion.
Filipino expatriates, including those working for various United Nations organs in Pakistan, showed up in their elegant barongs, ternos, or in the case of a small contingent of Filipino military officials currently assigned to the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), in their gala uniform.
Philippine Honorary Consul in Lahore Rizwan Fareed and his wife also came to the reception.
Guests were treated that evening to a sumptuous variety of Asian food. The event was also covered by the Pakistani media.
On 12 June, the Embassy held several activities with and for the Filipino Community in Islamabad.
The day began with a mass service at the Fatima Church that was organized jointly by the Embassy and the Filipino community, with the assistance of nuns from the Philippine-based Religious of the Virgin Mary (RVM) Congregation.
Two Pakistani priests who had visited the Philippines on numerous occasions concelebrated the mass. END

Promotion Campaign for the Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR)
The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is located about 50km north of the city of Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Philippines. It features a limestone karst mountain landscape with an 8.2 km navigable underground river. A distinguishing feature of the river is that it winds through a cave before flowing directly into the South China Sea. It includes major formations of stalactites and stalagmites, and several large chambers. The lower portion of the river is subject to tidal influences. The underground river is reputed to be the world's longest. At the mouth of the cave, a clear lagoon is framed by ancient trees growing right to the water's edge. Monkeys, large monitor lizards, and squirrels find their niche on the beach near the cave.
